Travelling is a great way to enjoy the warmer months. Hitting the open road to take in the sights is even better when you bring your best friend along for the fun. Planning a trip with your pet can be an exciting adventure, but it takes a little extra preparation to ensure the experience is safe and enjoyable for everyone.

1. Doctors Know Best

Travelling can be rough on pets, especially if you’ll be going long distances or taking a trip during a heat wave. To make sure your pets are ready for the excitement ahead, speak with your vet before making any travel plans. Of course, this is even more crucial if your pet has health issues, but even the healthiest pets may not be road-ready.

2. Check on Your Pet's Trip Level

If your pet is a fan of car rides, you know that these short trips around town are a fun way to get outside, enjoy the wind in their face, and spend time with their human buddies. Longer road trips, however, may be too intense for some pets. To see how your pet will handle a road adventure, take them for a car ride that’s longer than usual. Watch their reactions to gauge if they will enjoy it as much as you will.

3. Pack Lots of Food and Water

A long road trip may mean going for quite some time without passing a store—especially one that carries your pet's food. Without food and water, your pet may become sick or ill. Keep everyone happy and healthy by packing plenty of extra food and water. Make sure you have refillable water containers that you can rinse and refill whenever possible. While coming across a major store or pet specialty shop can be rare in some cases, it is very common to find rest areas and gas stations where you can refill water containers and stretch your legs.

It's always nice to have an oasis on the road. Kamloops Ramada is a pet-friendly hotel that is proud to offer you and your furry friend a comfortable place to stay this summer.
